RECAP: SkillsUSA Week at LCCTC 2023

MONDAY IS RECOGNITION DAY of SkillsUSA Week, the members of LCCTC's Chapter of SkillsUSA would like to thank the SkillsUSA Business Partners who support SkillsUSA with their generous donations and gifts of time and talents; the community leaders who serve as judges during competitions; the LCCTC Administration and JOC members who continually support our students throughout the years as the travel to state and national SkillsUSA Championships; and our steadfast advisors (Mrs. Weisenstein and Mr. Goebel) for all of their guidance and hard work -- making sure each member is able to learn to be prepared for the world of work, grow in their knowledge and skill, and have lots of fun in SkillsUSA!

TUESDAY IS GIVE BACK DAY of SkillsUSA Week. Our members are involved in many organizations that also promote service to our community and enjoy giving back; this idea of living a life of service continues in the hearts and minds of our chapter members through SkillsUSA, as well. They have used their skills to help build fire pits and refinish furniture for a local special-needs camp. They manage our school's SkillsUSA Closet where they organize kid-friendly donated items and inventory needs before their annual Shop with a Cop trip to restock. They have helped assemble bikes for kids in need, and participate in neighborhood cleanup days in the spring to make sure the roadways on the way to school are clear of trash and debris. SkillsUSA helps students use their skills and energy to prepare them to be good workers and citizens of tomorrow.

WEDNESDAY IS PARTNER DAY: Businesses and Industry have a big problem. Unfilled jobs are at record highs, and the skills gap is to blame.

But since 1965, SkillsUSA (formerly VICA) is helping fill that gap. SkillsUSA has helped over 14 million students find career and life success by teaching personal, workplace, and technical skills that prepare students for careers in trade, technical, and skilled service occupations. How do they do this? With the generosity of our partners in industry like 3M, American Airlines, Carhartt, General Electric, Harbor Freight, Harley Davidson, John Deere, Lincoln Electric, Lowe's, Nestle, Snap-On, State Farm, Tractor Supply, and Wolverine, SkillsUSA is able to support many students in career and technical education

THURSDAY IS ADVOCACY DAY: It's pretty easy to advocate for SkillsUSA; there is so much good within the organization!

STUDENTS, through active participation in the organization, are able to grow and develop their personal, workplace, and technical skills grounded in academics; gain access to exclusive scholarship opportunities; and earn recognition through SkillsUSA's local, state, and national career competition programs. Driven by employer demand, SkillsUSA helps students develop necessary personal and workplace skills along with technical skills grounded in academics. This SkillsUSA Framework empowers every student to succeed at work and in life while helping to close the skills gap in which millions of positions go unfilled.

BUSINESSES: "Partnering with SkillsUSA gives you the chance to influence students before they enter their career fields. You get to see how students work with their peers now. SkillsUSA adds competition and teamwork at the local school level. You get to see not only what makes students competitive, but you also get to see how each member evolves around others on their team. SkillsUSA continues to close gaps with technical skills training, and now draws even closer to professional and career readiness. SkillsUSA provides these classrooms with turnkey solutions that help develop each student’s personal, workplace, and technical skills." LinkedIn article by Christopher S. "Why your business should be involved with SkillsUSA"

What are the advantages of membership in SkillsUSA?

Students can grow and develop their personal, workplace, and technical skills grounded in academics. They gain access to exclusive scholarship opportunities designed to support their post-secondary plans in their program of study. They earn recognition through SkillsUSA’s local, state, and national career competition programs. They join and network with a community of like-minded peers from diverse backgrounds. They lead and participate in chapter activities. They network with business and industry leaders as they build their resumes through professional development opportunities.

Each day this week, we have featured a few of our SkillsUSA members who have earned district gold medals and earned the opportunity to compete in the PA SkillsUSA Championships. Below, you will see our entire team who, in April, LCCTC is proud to announce that these 33 students will advance to the next round of competition in Hershey. Each member has selected to focus on a skill found within the SkillsUSA Framework. When you see them, congratulate them -- and ask to buy a candy bar, a meat stick, or to support additional fund-raising efforts.
