Fall Band Feature: Koryn Kent

Drums here. A trumpet there. Pom-poms and sequins and flaming batons everywhere! Duck! There’s a flag twirling your way! Distractions are everywhere, but Koryn Kent is able to keep it all in check when she takes the field in her sparkling green and white uniform as a sophomore Spartanette.

Being a member of the flag line has actually helped Koryn pursue my chosen field at LCCTC, Commercial Art. Because of her work on the 100-yard field, she already understands a few key lessons taught in the CA theory room: the importance of an aesthetically-pleasing product, the need for balance, and the appeal to a wide-audience.

Beyond the visual aspect, there are other important lessons to be learned to help her develop real-world skills.

“I have come to understand the importance of patience and hand-eye coordination,” Kent states.

To develop the muscle memory it takes to perform on the field, Koryn must practice and repeat over and over and over until the routine is just right; she does this as an artist, too.

Without hand-eye coordination, a Spartanette might leave a practice or a game with good bruise or two. Though physical contact may not be true in the world of a commercial artist, patience and coordination certainly are. A steady eye, an attention to detail, the willingness to revise and edit until the final product is just right are transferrable skills on the field of grass or in the field of art, no matter the “uniform” Koryn wears.

With a flourish of a flag or the flourish from a brush, Koryn Kent brings beauty to this world.
