Shop with a Cop for the SkillsUSA Clothes Closet

by Madison Werner, Health Assistant Class of 2024

What is “Shop with a Cop” you might ask?  Shop with a cop, here at LCCTC, is a privileged experience where eighteen SkillsUSA members and other student leaders are selected to shop for the day with our SRO, Corporal James Hoyland from the New Castle City Police Department (NCPD), to purchase new, more modern clothing for LCCTC’s SkillsUSA Clothes Closet.

This year’s exciting trip took place on November 18th, starting our day at Lawrence County CTC.  The group took the school vans at 8:30 am to the Grove City outlets, arriving roughly around 9 am.  Our first stop: Old Navy!  We are so thankful that they generously opened their doors early for the group AND gave us a fifty-percent discount on the entire sale!

At 11:30, after an hour of personal shopping for whoever was interested, we jumped back into the vans to head over to Fat Eddie’s BBQ for a delicious meal.  Once everyone was finished with their food and interesting chatter, the census was made to spend extra time checking out last-minute deals, so the group headed back over to the outlets for more shopping!

Roughly around 2 pm, we headed back to LCCTC to return just in time for dismissal.  The other students and I had such an amazingly fun time.  From the group to the administration and teachers who were involved: Thank you so much for organizing this event!

El McKnight (Electrical Occupations senior) states,  “We don’t always think about helping our classmates and friends because we’re always helping the neighborhood or community.  I loved that we had the opportunity to do something good for each other as students.”

“Knowing that I helped do a good thing for students who don't have a lot was probably one of the many reasons I wanted to be a part of today,” exclaimed Anthony Procopio (Construction Trades junior).  “Also, I enjoyed having a good time with different SkillsUSA members who I don’t speak to as much.  It was a great time to bond before District 10 competition.”

Jolenna Street (Veterinary Assistant junior) adds, “I wanted to be a part of today because I wanted to help my peers who might need clothes for a variety of reasons.  Being able to help select some of the clothes that kids might want to wear is why I wanted to be a part of it today.  One of my favorite memories from today was the picture of Madison and El in cowboy hats to send to Mrs. McVicker for the article and Mrs. Pasterik for the yearbook.”

Today’s LCCTC Shop with a Cop for the SkillsUSA Clothes Closet was an amazing day filled with a unique opportunity to serve others.  It was an honor to be able to help while also having fun!
