Girls in Curls: Cosmetology First-Years Practice Updos

by Skye Moore, Cosmetology Junior

First year Cosmetology students have been working on a very particular set of hairstyles that their instructor, Mrs. Jamie Jones, planned for them.

After researching hair ideas for the clients, first year students went to work finding various ways of completing the beautiful styles for the brides to be.  “With a little curl, a pin or two, and maybe some hairspray,” reflects Skye Moore, junior first-year cosmetology student, “we were able to complete the hairstyles with an elegant finish.”

When the students complete their week of shop, they are able to spend their next week in their academics, but these courses often are delivered with a career twist.  Sure they learn traditional lessons, but the teachers make every effort to connect their learning to their lessons from shop.  “We have already written a cover letter and are now focusing on Latin roots,” Moore states.  “Not only are these terms helpful for our biology class; they are also familiar as we are able to apply them to many terms we have already learned in shop classes!  It’s cool how our academic teachers guide us to make those connections as we study!”

Moore notes, “I love how LCCTC prepares us for the future! We get to learn skills that we might use in the future during both our vocational and academic weeks. We are able to explore our careers in one week, and in the other week, we get our regular day of learning.”  She also disclosed how her instructors and teachers have made her feel welcome coming into LCCTC.

With a little hairspray and some minor touch-ups, cosmetology students finished the project on their female mannequin heads. “After a little bit of curling and precision, we were able to make the clients’ desired hairstyle for their big day!” Moore said with enthusiasm.

...and with the lesson coming to an end, they are off to learn another. Anxiously awaiting their next, the Cosmetology students are ready, shears in hand, to conquer the next task.
