The Health Fair has Gone to the Dogs!

by Keegan Wallace, senior Veterinary Assistant

The LCCTC Veterinary Assistant shop took a trip to the New Castle Scottish Rite Cathedral where we talk to kids and answer their questions about veterinary medicine during the Health Career Day. Though many didn’t expect to find Veterinary Assistant students, once kids finally saw us, they were very eager to learn about our program and many of the students asked numerous questions.

The most popular question asked was, “What kind of skills have you learned over the years?” We told them all about the restraints, how to bathe and toe nail trim, learning medical terminology, and how to identify different types of animal breeds. We let them know that some of our favorite skills include running blood tests, anatomy, systems, and parasites -- this discussion was met with a few wrinkled noses and “Ewwww”s, but Veterinary Science isn’t for everyone.

Many 8th grade students were interested in the grooming side of the field. The students also asked, “How was grooming important to this field?” We let them know that it was essential it to properly bathe a dog, clean their ears, and brush their teeth -- not only so the dog smells better, but for a dog’s overall well-being.

Kayla Janiel, a senior in the Vet Assistant program, says, “It was nice to be given the chance to educate 8th graders about my passion -- a career in veterinary medicine.  I was also pleased to be able to inform them of the opportunities at LCCTC. VA is more than just playing with puppies and kitties; it’s helping animals while learning other skills like teamwork, patience and determination -- all in one.”

We enjoyed being able to interact with the students and inform them about our program and school.  We could see a lot of kids that were really interested in the program, and I hope a lot of them take advantage of this opportunity. It was a ton of fun to be able to not only represent this program but our school as well.

All in all, it is safe to say this day was one for the books for LCCTC, and we can now officially claim that “This health career fair has gone to the dogs!”
