Figuratively Speaking

While listening to popular music that features the focus of their lesson, Mrs. McVicker’s class labled examples of figurative language in song lyrics, marking their answers with a coordinating color. As they apply their understanding, they work together to justify their answers, and if all goes well, an image appears confirming they were right on track.

They’re getting ready to continue on to their 2nd semester’s focus: career-themed literature. Figurative language in stories and poetry adds to the beauty of language, but when used in nonfiction, words have power. Kids will use critical thinking skills to evaluate sources and to develop self-disciplined thinking as they analyze author’s meaning . . .

. . . but for now, they’re having a little fun while they learn.
